GREAT MONGOLS: Anonymous, ca. 1230s, AV dinar (3.08g), Astarabad, AH(63)4, A-1966A, obverse legend al-khaqan / al-'adil / al-a'zam, Shi'ite kalima on the reverse, with the mint clear to right; the obverse margin shows (as)tarabad bi-ta(rikh sana) arba' …, with the next word most likely thalathin for "30", hence likely 634, minimal weakness for this type, VF to EF, RRR. Also known dated AH632 (our Auction 34, Lot 876). The early Great Mongol dinars bearing the Shi'ite kalima were struck only at Astarabad, a tradition often continued for more than 250 years, before finally falling to the Safavids circa AH920.
