Description

ABBASID: AE fals (2.24g), Shayzar (Shezar), ND, A-S293, citing the governors Safwan b. al-Fadl and Muhammad b. (Salih?), struck on thin flan cut from broad copper sheet, as was typical of some Western Syrian mints circa AH240-300, VF, RRRR. This is the first reported coin from the mint of Shayzar, located along the Orontes River, about 15 miles northwest of Hamah, known from ancient times and now a suburb of the modern city of Muhradan. It was the capital of the Manqidhid tribe, who ruled there circa 1025-1155.
