Description

SASANIAN KINGDOM: Hormizd, ca. late 590s, AR drachm (4.21g), WYHC (the Treasury mint), year 6 or 7, G-—, Mochini-523, 526 & 527, issued by little-known Hormizd, who rebelled against Khusro II, with design and layout similar to the issues of Khusro II between his regnal years 2 and 11, mount removed, lovely obverse, reverse from worn dies, bold VF, RRR. Mochiri labeled this ruler Hormizd V, and the later ruler of 631-632 as Hormizd VI. The reverse dies of all known examples cite the mint name WYHC, but there is no historic evidence that this Hormizd rebelled at the home of the Treasury. Perhaps these were struck with stolen or abandoned reverse dies.
Estimate: USD 600 - 700
