ILKHAN: Hulagu, 1256-1265, AR dirham (2.95g), Dimashq, AH658, A-2124, Heidemann-5, SNAT-944/45, conquest coin; Hulagu is described as "the conqueror of the coast (al-basita) by the grace of his brother Möngke, the Great Qa'an"; full mint & date, perhaps the finest example for this important rarity, VF-EF, RR, ex Christian Rasmussen Collection, ex Claus Pelling Collection. The coast refers to the Mediterranean, which of course he never quite reached! Hulagu occupied Damascus for three months in AH658.
