JAPAN: Meiji, 1868-1912, copper-nickel medal, commemorating the 1100th Anniversary of the Transfer of the Capital to Heian in 1895. The Hyoen-no-Kyo-enka Sento Centennial Memorial Festival was planned by the Kyoto Business Association. Kyoto City selected three members from the council and four members of the Kinensai from the city association, and asked the government for cooperation in organizing the Kinensai Festival and attracting the 4th National Industrial Exposition. The Heian-jingu Shrine, which enshrines Emperor Kanmu, was completed in March of the 28th year of the Meiji period. The Jidai Matsuri Festival is one of Kyoto's "Three Great Festivals" and a major event held at Heian-jingu Shrine. It began in 1895 in order to commemorate the 1,100th anniversary of the transfer of the capital to Heian-kyo (currently Kyoto).
