Description

SHAYBANID: 'Abd Allah II, 1583-1598, AV 1/12 Indian mohur, [Badakhshan], AH1004, A-2994, obverse in quatrefoil, pointed left & right, date at obverse left, ANACS graded XF45. The 1/12 mohur, formerly classified as ¼ mithqal, was almost certainly struck solely at Badakhshan, though the mint name almost never appears on the coin. The full and half mithqals were struck only at Mashhad and Herat. This denomination is consistently too heavy to be viewed as a ¼ ashrafi (about 0.86g), too light to be ¼ mithqal (1.16g). On the other hand, one twelfth of a full-weight mohur of contemporary Mughal Akbar, about 11.02g, would be about 0.918g, perfect for this denomination, and almost identical to 1/5 of a mithqal (0.93g). Earlier coins of this denomination were struck by the Mughal emperors Humayun and Akbar from the 950s until 987, albeit with variable weight.
