UMAYYAD: Anonymous, ca. 720-740, AE fals (1.84g), NM, ND, A-143, Spanish type, thick narrow flan, VF Typically with a thickness between 2.0mm and 3.5mm, these were likely struck before the founding of the Spanish Umayyad dynasty in 138. They are characterized by thick letters in the legends, not unlike contemporary Egyptian and Syrian fulus. Much thinner types were struck after 138, under the Umayyads of Spain, usually with the longer first half of the kalima (listed here as types #346-347B).This is the first example of this type we have offered at auction.
