Description

SAFAVID: Isma'il I, 1501-1524, AR shahi (9.46g), Badakhshan, AH918, A-2576, weak date, but confirmed by obverse die-link to lot 558 sold in our Auction 48; minimal weakness, VF, RRR. Badakhshan was seized by Nasir Mirza, brother of Babur, in AH910, lost after a year or two, recaptured for Babur in 913, and assigned to his cousin Sultan Uwais, who ruled at Badakhshan 913-927, after which Badakhshan was assigned to Humayun, the future Mughal sultan. This does not explain the Safavid coins of Badakhshan dated 918, though it seems likely that Uwais might have recognized the Safavids for assistance that apparently never materialized. Babur did not strike coins again at Badakhshan until 929 (the alleged 921 type has a very unclear date, Rahman type #2).

Estimate: USD 150-200
