Description

BRITISH INDIA: George III, 1760-1820, AE medal (1761), Pud-761.1, Eimer-686, 40mm, medal by Thomas Pingo, head of King George III right // Victory standing, writing on the shield; palm trees and paddles flank the water of the Indus and Ganges rivers, inscribed "Pondicherry taken MDCCLXI, total expulsion of the French from India ", rim cuds on both sides, tiny indentations in the center on both sides, a superb example! PCGS graded PF64 BR, ex Seaby (with tag). The names Coote and Steevens, engraved by Victory on a shield, refer to the two British commanders, Admiral Sir Eyre Coote and Rear Admiral Charles Steevens, who were successful in the capture of Pondicherry on January 16, 1761. Pondicherry was returned to the French in 1763.
