Description

GUPTA: Chandragupta IV, ca. 470+, AV dinar (8.59g), Kumar p.385, type A, king standing, nimbate, holding bow & arrow, Garuda standing to left, no inscription // Lakshmi, nimbate, seated on lotus, holding diadem & stylized cornucopiae, lovely VF-EF, RR. This issue of Chandragupta IV is distinguished by the addition of a small altar between the king's head and the top of the Garuda standard and the weight. The 2 pieces illustrated by Kumar weigh 8.56g and 8.60g, thus precisely around this piece. The dinars of Chandragupta III and IV are immediately distinguished from the common dinars of Chandragupta II by their weight, heavier than any dinars of Chandragupta II, and by the symbols between the head and Garuda standard. There are undoubtedly some examples of Chandragupta IV in other collections misattributed to Chandragupta II. Of the more than 100 Archer types of Changragupta dinars listed on CoinArchives, none are of Chandragupta IV.

Estimate: USD 1600-2000
