The initiative came from Henry P. Davison, President of the American Red Cross. Experience from the war showed that the national Red Cross Societies ought to cooperate more closely also in peacetime. The Red Cross Societies of the USA, Great Britain, France, Italy and Japan were the first members of the League, known today as the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). The Iranian Red Lion and Sun Society was founded in 1922, it became affiliated with the IFRC in 1924. Jacques Devigne (1925-) was a student at Boulle School in Paris, then the National School of Fine Arts where he was a student of Henri Dropsy. He obtained the first grand prix of Rome in engraving of medal and sculpture in 1954 and became a resident of the villa Medici from 1955 to 1958. He was a professor of visual arts in Paris from 1959 to 1990 at the Lycée Maximilien Vox, and also associate professor at the Ecole du Louvre in Paris from 1970 to 1977. Jacques Devigne is a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters .
