CEYLON (DUTCH): AR tanga (2.23g), cf Sch-1271; Gomes-15.01, with GAL monogram countermark for the city of Galle, applied in 1680, on Portuguese Ceylon Felipe III silver tanga dated 1640, test cuts in edge, small scrape in obverse field, but overall a lovely coin, VF-EF, ex Baldwin's Hong Kong Coin Auction 60, Lot 817. Portuguese Indian coins were countermarked by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) for use in their colonies in Ceylon.
