Description

ANATOLIAN BEYLIKS: Anonymous, ca. mid 14th century, AR gigliato (3.74g), ND, Schlumberger-XVIII:13-18, imitating a Neapolitan gigliato of Robert of Anjou (1309-1343), king enthroned facing, holding lis-tipped scepter and globus cruciger, throne decorated with lions, trilobe on breast // floriated cross, blundered inscription, lovely even strike, iridescent toning, XF, RR, ex SARC Auction 17, Lot 275. Following the collapse of the Seljuqs of Rum in the early 14th century a collection of Turkish beyliks took over the regions comprising ancient Ionia, Caria, and Lydia. Many of them established trade with the Crusader successor states and used imitative Italian gigliati as currency. Eventually the gigliato was replaced by the Turkish akçe as the beyliks were absorbed into the Ottoman Empire.
