Yakub Beg was a Muslim adventurer of Tajik or Uzbek descent who took advantage of the Muslim revolts across northwestern China during the reign of Tongzhi and established himself as ruler of Kashgaria. Though he was recognized as emir by the Ottoman sultan and his government entered into treaties with Russia and Great Britain, his rule was unpopular with the local population due to his harsh treatment and the cessation of trade. Just a few months after his death in 1877, Xinjiang was completely reconquered by the Qing army under the command of General Zuo Zongtang.
