Leo II, grandson of Leo I, was born in 467 and named Caesar in October 473, elevated to the rank of Augustus shortly before his grandfather's death. Following grandfather's death, he was named sole emperor of the East on 18 January 474. Because of his weak health and inability to perform the imperial requisites he was made co-emperor with Zeno on 9 February 474. His health full to increasing illness and he died on or about 17 November 474. Zeno became the sole emperor of the East later that same day. Two years later, in 476, the West was effectively lost to the Roman Empire.
