AFSHARID: Nadir Shah, 1735-1747, AR rupi (11.53g), Ahmadabad, AH1152 year 1, A-2744.2, KM-A385.1, lovely strike on broad flan, with 4 testmarks on the surfaces and 2 more on the edge, pleasant VF, RRR. The Iranian armies under Nadir Shah conquered Delhi (Shahjahanabad) in AH1151, but restored it to the Mughals in the following year in exchange for the contents of the treasury. Many regionally leaders must have feared that Nadir would ultimately conquer all of India, which of course never happened. Some of these leaders nonetheless ordered their mints to strike coins in the name of Nadir Shah, known from Ahmadabad, as well as Azimabad (= Patna), Benares, and Murshidabad, all of the highest degree of rarity. Others were struck at the west Indian mints or Lahore, Multan, Shikarpur, Sahrind, and Tatta, all at least very rare.
