KALAT: temp. Shah Nawaz Khan, 1839-1841, AE falus (7.14g), Qalât, DM, KM-, legends zarb-i fath khan // falus qalat, with traces of a date above the reverse (known dated AH1255 on the unique specimen sold in our Auction 30, Lot 2504), VF, RRR. Fath Khan ("victorious khan") is probably a reference to the victory of Shah Nawaz after the murder of his predecessor, Mehrab Khan, which occurred during the British conquest of Kalat under the command of Sir Thomas Willshire in 1839; the term "fath khan" was likely an honorary title assigned to Shah Nawaz Khan upon his appointment by the British forces.
