Description

NOLAMBAS OF NOLAMBAVADI: Nanni Nolamba I, ca. 940-970, AV nandi gadyana (3.68g), Central Karnataka: nine punches, including Nandi humped bull recumbent to right (1x), sun & crescent above (5x), symbol Sri (2x), and elephant goad (1x) plus legend ka ra (perhaps the last letters of Chaladankakara, the title of Nanni Nolamba); uniface, still unpublished, known only from a few examples sold in 2018-2019, EF. The Nolambas were a minor dynasty of medieval Karnataka, that flourished under Rashtrakuta tutelage until overthrown by the Ganga kings circa 970.
