ILKHAN: Hulagu, 1256-1265, AR dirham (2.92g), Dimashq, AH658, A-2124, fully legible mint & date, extremely rare type for this mint, Mongol conquest coin, on which Hulagu is described as "the conqueror of the coast (al-basita) by the grace of his brother Möngke, the Great Qa'an", excellent example, superb bold strike, formerly cleaned but now very attractive, VF-EF, RRR. The coast refers to the Mediterranean, which of course the Mongol army never quite reached! Hulagu occupied Damascus for three months in AH658.
