An additional 6,400 pieces were struck in 1801 with the 1796 date. David Vice states that although the fineness of this issue was reduced to .890 in 1801, the date was fixed at 1796. There is no way to tell the difference between the 1801 issues and the 1796 ones, except for metal analysis such as XRF.
