ROMAN REPUBLIC: L. Hostilius Saserna, moneyer, AR denarius (3.95g), Rome, 48 BC, Crawford-448/2a, Sydenham-952, head of Gallic captive right, Gallic shield behind // two long-haired and bearded warriors in galloping biga right, one holding whip and reins, the other standing backward, brandishing spear and shield, L HOSTILIVS / SASERN, lovely strike despite minor weakness, stone-gray toning with iridescent hues, Choice VF. The figure on the obverse is commonly identified as Vercingetorix, the king of the Arverni who united Gallic tribes against the Roman forces and was famously defeated at the Battle of Alesia by Julius Caesar, though this identification is doubtful.
