Description

SPAIN: CASTILE & LEÓN: Alfonso VIII, 1158-1214, AV maravedi (morabitino) (3.29g), Tulaytula (Toledo), Hispanic era 1229, MEC-6:361, Christian legends in Arabic on both sides, plus the Latin abbreviation of the ruler 's name ALF in the reverse field, lovely bold strike, EF, R. The MEC translation of the legends: Obverse: "the emir of the Catholics Alfonso ben Sancho", mint & date around. Reverse: "the imam of the Church of the Messiah is the Roman Pope", and around, "in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, God is One. He that believeth in Him and is baptized shall be saved"; cross above and ALF below.
