SICILY: Tancred, 1189-1194, AV tari (0.92g) (Messina), Spahr-134, Spinelli-XVII:30, V with crossbar in center, Arabic al-malik tanqrid al-mu 'azzam around // IC XC NI KA, cross in center, 2 annulets above, unread Arabic legend around, slightly double-struck, EF, RR. Sambon & Spinelli have suggest that the V stands for William, son of Tancred, who was nominated as heir to the throne about 1193, and very briefly ruled after his father 's death for a few months in 1194 before his defeat by Enrico later that year.
