Description

FRANCE: Republic, AR medal (159.5g), ND (1899), Maier-223, 68mm unissued silver award medal of Orpheus struck for the Universal Exhibition of 1900 in Paris by Lucien Coudray, bust of Orpheus facing ¾ left holding cithara, with laurel tree behind appearing to crown him // winged Genius sitting on uninscribed pedestal with scroll, leaning back and holding clarion and quill, with violin below on laurel wreath, with beautiful natural deep tone, ARGENT and cornucopia privy mark on edge, Choice AU, ex Coin Galleries August 2009 Sale, Lot 6262 (tag enclosed). Many of these are unawarded, as in the case here, because many of these medals were sold to the public at the Exhibition. One of the most beautiful medals of the Art Nouveau era.
