Description

GREAT BRITAIN: brass token, ND, TC-374398, 19.5mm, TAYLOR / & / CHALLEN / Ld / BIRMINGHAM // MINTING MACHINERY around coinage press, a superb quality example! PCGS graded MS63. Taylor and Challen Limited was founded by Joseph Taylor in 1852 in Birmingham. The company produced presses for the minting of coinage and other machinery. The company was first established on Broad Street, but moved to Constitution Hill in 1861, where Joseph Taylor erected a new purpose-built foundry to the rear of an earlier range of offices. Further substantial and distinct buildings including large showrooms, were constructed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries nearby. In 1889 the company was registered as a limited company. By circa 1919 the buildings on Constitution Hill had grown to form a cohesive group to the south east of the foundry.
