Description

TENASSERIM-PEGU: Anonymous, 17th-18th century, cast tin large coin (49.75g), Robinson—, Phayre-Plate III.3 (obverse only), 68.5mm, mythical hintha bird facing right, with long tail rising above, without the extra feathers along its back (probably later use of the same molds), and holding a 9-leaf branch in its beak // Burmese ta-weh (for the city of Dawei in Tenasserim Province), same molds as Lot 1866 in our Auction 35; beautifully preserved, EF, RRR. The reverse was published and the legend read by Elizabeth Moore, "Dawei Buddhist culture: a hybrid borderland," in Myanmar Historical Research Journal, vol. 21 (June 2011).
