INDORE: Shivaji Rao, 1886-1903, AR rupee, VS1958, KM-47, milled coinage-3rd series, bust of Maharaja Shivaji Rao II facing slightly left, continuous Devanagari legend srimat shivajirao maharaj holkar indore samvat 1958 around // coat of arms, denomination, English legend "Indore" below, very rare date, lightly cleaned, AU, RRR. This series was introduced in 1898 to counteract forgeries, as counterfeiting of the 2nd series had begun to proliferate as a result of a sharp fall in the price of silver. Idle minting machines were reactivated for this purpose, but the series was short lived.
