PORTUGAL. Portugal - Mexico. 870 Reis, ND (1834). Maria II. PCGS EF-40 Gold Shield.
KM-440.13; Gomes-M2.27.37. Issued by decree of 1 September 1834. Crowned arms of Portugal applied to the obverse of an 1804-MoTH Mexico bust 8 Reales of Charles IIII (IV). Countermark deeply impressed, though slightly doubled somewhat muddling the design features. An attractive moderately circulated example with attractive slate grey patina with a lovely light iridescent sheen in the peripherals. A nice wholesome and original looking survivor much nicer looking than many encountered in the market. In 1834 the Government ordered all Spanish and Spanish colonial 8 Reales then in circulation to be countermarked with the crowned arm of Portugal raising the value to 870 Reis and revalidating them to circulate freely.
