TIBERIUS, A.D. 14-37. Cut AV Aureus (5.74 gms), Lugdunum Mint, A.D. 36-37.
cf. RIC-29; cf. Calico-305c. "Tribute Penny" type. Obverse: TI CAESAR DIVI AVG F AVGVSTVS, laureate head right; Reverse: PONTIF MAXIM, Livia (as Pax), holding branch and scepter, seated right on throne with decorated legs. At times, aurei such as this were cut in order to facilitate smaller change, as an aureus equaled 25 denarii. The weight of the present example is roughly 3/4 what a normal, full weight aureus would be, making this an unusual choice in antiquity. Nevertheless, the "tribute penny" type remains an interesting and collectible type for collectors across the spectrum.
