PERU. Falsa Época. Sub-Standard Purity Contemporary Counterfeit 8 Escudos, 1787-LM MI. Uncertain Local Mint "Lima", Assayer MI. Charles III. CHOICE EXTREMELY FINE DETAILS.
22.19 gms. Onza-1454; cf.Cal-Type 8 (for basic type); cf.KM-82.1a (for basic type). Light weight contemporary counterfeit 8 Escudos struck in imitation of a 1787-LM MI Peru 8 Escudos of Charles III. The legends are Obverse: "CAROL.III.D.G. HISP.ETIND.R. .1787."; Reverse: "IN.UTROQ.PELIX..AUSPICE.DEO .ME..MI.". The style and execution are fairly well done exhibiting a bold strike and finely engraved design features, clearly an example that would have been able to passed in circulation when in mixed in with legitimate issues. The legends are also fairly well done except some of the letters are too closely spaced and some are misshapen, the first "7" of the date has been re-punched over another "7". Several edge bumps with a couple of digs on the obverse and reverse are noted for accuracy. Otherwise a handsome well made and nicely preserved example sure to be welcome addition to the next collection it enters.
