PHILIPPINES. Philippines - Peru. 8 Reales, 1828. Manila Mint. Ferdinand VII. PCGS Genuine--Filed Rims, Fine Details Gold Shield.
KM-24; Basso-35; PNM#16-23; PNM#21-108; Cacho-Type I CS-015; Lopez-Chavez Yriarte-Type I; cf.ECP-Fig. 1. Issued by decree of 13 October 1828. Type I Manila Overstrike, with serrated boarders and reverse legend; dies prepared by Don Benito de los Reyes. Overstruck on an 1825-LIMAE-JM Peru Republic 8 Reales. A VERY RARE host coin and only the second example we have recorded of the overstrike on a first year Lima issue. Obverse: "MANILA" and date boldy struck with some remnants of serrated boarder; Reverse: Crowned arms of Spain nearly fully struck up with portions of the legend. Much of the under type still visible, including last digits of date, mint mark, and assayers' initials. Light evidence of edge filing now obscured by the PCGS holder and as such hardly distracting. Despite its shortcomings a lightly toned and presentable example of this popular type sure to be a welcome addition to the next collection it enters.
