Description

GUATEMALA. Guatemala - Chile. Mint Error -- Full Brockage Reverse -- Peso, 1894. Guatemala City Mint. PCGS VF-25 Gold Shield; Countermark: VF Details.
cf.KM-216 (for basic type); cf.Jovel-Type VIII countermark, Fig. 7-7 (for off-center strike error). 1/2 Real currency dies utilized as a countermark. Issued by decree of July 1894, commencing 10 August 1894 until early 1895. EXTREMELY RARE with only a couple of known errors from this series including the off-center strike plated in Jovel. On an 1870-So Chile Republic Peso. Countermark with significant die rust in the fields from prolonged use and unusually deep application due to a few extra millimeters from the previously countermarked Peru Un Sol ca. 1864-95 left in collar. Minor debris within the devices and the recesses with light attractive soft grey patina and areas of slate in the crevasses. A handsome and very interesting example of the type with lots of character certain to see spirited bidding from the advanced collector. Prior to the discovery of the present example, not much thought was put into this series since nearly all examples are in accordance with the above decree which called for the countermarks to be placed in the center of the coins. Since the countermarks were issued simultaneously alongside the Peso issues, the necessary minting equipment was already in use and available for application at the mint. The 1/2 Real currency dies and Peso collars were re-purposed for the countermarking action and this error occurred when a Peru Sol had been countermarked, but failed to eject from the collar. Subsequently other Pesos were fed in and struck leaving an incuse mirror image of both the countermark and original Peru host coin.
From the Kyle Ponterio Collection.
Estimate: $300.00- $500.00
