Description

CANADA. Canada - Mexico. Prince Edward Island. Holey Dollar (5 Shillings), ND (1813). PCGS Genuine--Graffiti, VF Details Gold Shield.
21.26 gms. KM-2; Faulkner-Group F. Issued by Authority of 24 September 1813. Central plug punched through the obverse with nine pointed sun burst countermark applied to obverse at 1 o'clock near rim on a 1783-MoFF Mexico 8 Reales of Charles III. VERY RARE early host date. Light old "X" pin scratches to the right of the bust accounts for the details designation of "Graffiti", though hardly distracting and long since toned over to match the rest of the coin. A wholesome example of the type despite the noted minor impairment, with rich old cabinet tone displaying smooth slate grey throughout and areas of charcoal patina amongst the devices. A historically interesting and highly important issue representing the first Dollar of Canada. In his outstanding survey of known examples "The Holey Dollars and Dumps of Prince Edward Island", Christopher Faulkner lists only three examples, all in Group C, of earlier dated host coins which all happen to be of Mexico City Mint.
From the Kyle Ponterio Collection.
Estimate: $1000.00- $1500.00
