Description

FRANCE. Ecu d'Or, ND (1380-1422). Charles VI. NGC-61.
3.89 gms. Fr-291; Dupl-369; Ciani-484. This écu d'or à la couronne replaced the franc à cheval of the previous reign and was initially valued at 22 sols, 6 deniers tournois, which was raised to 30 sols in 1419 and 40 sols in 1420 then back to 22 sol, 6 deniers later that year. The écu d'or would remain the primary French gold coin through the reign of Louis XIII but would never remain stable either in weight or in value. This example is likely too light to be from the first emission (March 1385, 4.07 g) but may be from the second emission (February 1388, 3.99 g). Well struck with virtually complete legends, only minor unobtrusive portions off the flan and a small section slightly doubled. Nice strong central designs with contact marks and signs of handling consistent for the grade. Overall a pleasant example with light attractive tone.
Estimate: $700.00 - $900.00
