1825/4/2 Capped Bust Quarter. B-3. Rarity-3. MS-62 (PCGS). Gold CAC. CMQ-X.
An exciting offering for the CAC collector, this is the only 1825 quarter - of any die pairing, in any grade - that has received Gold-level approval from this service. While certified "only" MS-62 by PCGS (in an older Generation 4.1 holder), the quality and eye appeal are such that we unhesitatingly agree with CAC that this is a Choice Mint State coin. Lustrous and frosty, the surfaces are well preserved with only a few trivial, widely scattered handling marks that will require magnification to discern. The in-hand appearance is remarkably smooth. Sharply struck and nicely centered, both sides are further enhanced by lovely toning that shows enhancing blushes of iridescent powder blue, champagne pink and reddish-apricot to a base of soft antique silver tinting. Thoroughly PQ and sure to sell for a very strong bid. Both known obverse dies of this issue have been classified as 1825/4/2 in the current market, replacing older classifications of 1825/4/3, 1825/3, and so on. The obverse of B-2 and B-3, represented here, is distinguished from that of B-1 by having star 13 well below the edge of Liberty's lowest hair curl. On the reverse of B-3 the denomination 25 C. is low in the field and further from the arrow feather and branch stem than on examples of the B-2 attribution. Although plentiful in an absolute sense, examples of the B-3 die marriage are rare in Mint State, the coin offered here numbering among the 15 or 20 finest known based on the fact that only 10 distinct Mint State examples are listed in the 2010 census compiled by Rory R. Rea et al.
