Description

1891 Liberty Head Nickel. MS-67 (CACG).
Lightly toned in iridescent champagne-pink and apricot, this captivating Superb Gem is boldly struck with abundant mint luster. Uncommonly well preserved for both the type and issue, this is a stunning coin that will please even the most discerning type collector or Liberty Head nickel enthusiast. A workhorse issue in the United States Mint's nickel five-cent series of the late 19th century, the 1891 has a circulation strike mintage of 16,832,000 pieces. While this is a respectable total in an absolute sense, survivors are scarcer than one might initially assume, indicative of heavy commercial demand at the time. Sixty nine obverse dies were prepared for this issue, and quality varies widely among Mint State survivors. The most fortunate and, hence, desirable are fully defined in most areas with perhaps a touch of softness engaging one or two obverse stars and/or the lower portion of the wreath on the reverse. The offered coin falls into this category, but where it separates from the pack is in the area of surface preservation. Both sides are virtually pristine and identify this as one of the very finest Mint State 1891 nickels known to the major third party certification services.
PCGS# 3852. NGC ID: 2776.
