1928-D Mercury Dime. MS-67+ (PCGS). CAC.
The 1928-D is typically offered in the lowest circulated grades and it is scarce even in EF and AU. Mint State coins are rare, especially with the combination of superior striking detail and Gem surface preservation. As David W. Lange reported in 2005 edition of his Complete Guide to Mercury Dimes : More of a problem than incomplete bands, however, is a particular susceptibility to flatness in the legends. This phenomenon appears with nearly all dates in this series, but 1928-D rarely appears without it. The offered coin is one of the rare exceptions to this norm, as the peripheral letters on both sides, as well as the digit 8 in the date, are crisp and distinct from the rims. Central detail is well above average for the issue with the crossbands 75% full and the remaining features sharply rendered. Dusted with sandy-silver and pale gold iridescence, the softly frosted surfaces border on pristine. This is a superior coin in a Mint State 1928-D dime, and it will surely command the respect of astute specialists in the Mercury series.
