1796 Draped Bust Dime. JR-6. Rarity-3. VF-35 (PCGS).
Despite its status as the second most frequently encountered die pairing of the issue, the 1796 JR-6 is scarce to very scarce in all grades. It should be recalled in this context that only 800 to 1,200 examples of this first-year dime are extant in all grades (per Winton Zack et al., 2015), a total that is insufficient to meet strong numismatic demand for such a historic issue. A handsomely toned piece, the Choice VF offered here exhibits whispers of cobalt blue peripheral color on otherwise rose-gray surfaces. Much bolder detail remains on surfaces that are a tad glossy, yet only lightly marked and pleasingly smooth during in-hand viewing.
