1884 Charles Edward Anthon Medal. By Lea Ahlborn. Miller-7. Silver. MS-63 (NGC).
68 mm. A richly toned piece with vivid iridescent undertones to dominant charcoal-gray patina. The toning is not so deep that the viewer aided by direct lighting cannot appreciate reflective tendencies in the fields. The motifs are fully struck and softly frosted in texture. Anthon served as president of the American Numismatic Society on three occasions: April 25 to May 9, 1867; March 26, 1868 to March 24, 1870; March 27, 1873 until his death on June 7, 1883. Mintage for the Anthon medal is 85 examples in bronze - the metallic composition usually seen. The far rarer silver impression offered here is from a mintage of just 15 pieces.
From the Scott H. Miller Collection. Earlier Ex Michael Druck; our (Coin Galleries') sale of the Druck Family Collection, December 2001, lot 3119.
