Description

Undated (1876) First Membership Medal. Rejected Reverse Die. By George Hampden Lovett. Miller-3. White Metal. MS-63 DPL (NGC).
42 mm. Dusted with delicate gold and silver iridescence, this glorious specimen readily reveals strong cameo contrast between reflective fields and matte-like motifs. This rejected reverse die differs from that eventually adopted (Miller-4) in having a raised band around a lighter wreath. The two examples in the ANS Collection are inscribed, but here the central reverse is blank. One of just 12 struck, and a great rarity, as such.
From the Scott H. Miller Collection. Earlier from Presidential Coin & Antique Co., Inc.'s Auction Fifty Eight, July 1995, lot 430; Presidential Coin & Antique Co., Inc.'s Auction 67, June 2000, lot 326.

Estimate: $1000
