Two-Piece Set of 1850 Henry Clay-Compromise Medal Electrotypes, Matched Obverse and Reverse. As Julian PE-7. Copper Shells. Essentially As Issued.
89.2 mm. A fascinating matched set of electrotype shells, as made but never joined to a rim and weighted center. These are interesting to show the process of electrotyping, but also underscore that this medal was scarce enough in the 1860s or 1870s (when these shells were likely made) that collectors needed an obtainable replacement. Surfaces are rose and medium brown with typical inherent waviness but show excellent sharpness and eye appeal. We have offered several typical completed electrotype copies of this medal, but this is the only unjoined set of shells in our database.
From the Harry and Phyllis Salyards Collection. Earlier from our (Coin Galleries') sale of December 2009, lot 1322.
