1805 Eccleston Medal. Musante GW-88, Baker-85. Copper, Bronzed. MS-63 BN (PCGS).
76 mm. Both sides exhibit pleasing reflectivity and choice deep golden-brown patina with a generous touch of multicolored iridescence. The planchets for these large medals were, of necessity, cast, and specimens normally exhibit porous surfaces. That natural planchet porosity is present on this piece, but it does not interfere with the medal's superior luster. Typical die crack at center right of the reverse. Quaker eccentric Eccleston combined his admiration of Washington with his lifelong advocacy of Native American rights in this bold design, which depicts Washington in medieval armor.
