Description

"1857" (ca. 1950) James Buchanan Indian Peace Medal. Fillmore-Pierce Reverse Muling. Silver. First Size. Failor-Hayden 115, Julian IP-36 (for type), Prucha-Unlisted (for type). Choice Mint State.
76.0 mm. 3707.7 grains. Light silver gray with satiny matte surfaces. Slightly darker patina outlines the central motif. A curious muling using the reverse of the Millard Fillmore and Franklin Pierce medals rather than that intended for the Buchanan issue. Rare in this format, as bronzes are typically seen and even those are pretty scarce. XRF tested as 94.93% silver, 5.07% copper.
