"1781" (post-1839) General Daniel Morgan, Battle of the Cowpens Medal. Dies by Jean-Jacques Barre, after Dupre. Betts-593, Julian MI-7, Adams-Bentley 10. Bronze. MS-65 (PCGS).
56.3 mm. 1300.0 grains. Plain edge. An eternally popular highlight of both the Comitia Americana and U.S. Mint medal series. Rich mahogany bronzing graces both sides over immaculate fields. Free of spots, marks, or striking flaws, with only a few modern and easily remedied fingerprints seen. The superb transfer dies made at the behest of the United States Congress by Barre are exceptionally well detailed. While the dies were created simply to produce a gold replacement medal for Morgan's descendants, we are fortunate that they were deposited at the Philadelphia Mint to make high quality productions for the rest of us. While these tend to come nice, this is nicer than typical.
