"1751" (1880-1898) Franco-American Jeton. Standing Indian, No Alligator. Betts-385, Breton-510. Silver. AU Details--Damage (PCGS).
28.5 mm. 157.3 grains. Medal turn. Edge described as "Plain edge, stamped ARGENT" in the 2017 Richard Cooper sale, though only a bit of the ARGENT mark is visible within the slab right of 12 o'clock. Lovely antique gray with hints of golden toning around the peripheries. Sharply struck and well centered on a broad planchet with the full length of the denticles visible on both sides. A few heavy marks on the Indian's chest are the only significant flaws, but they are significant enough to earn the PCGS "damage" designation. Excellent eye appeal overall, a very scarce restrike offering a bold impression of the reverse die and an unusual, unsigned obverse.
From the Joe Foster Collection. Earlier ex Richard Cooper Collection; Geoffrey Bell Auctions' sale of September 2017, lot 384.
