Description

Undated (ca. 1880-1898?) Louis XIV Honos et Virtus Indian Peace Medal. After Betts-160. Bronze. Unc Details-- Cleaned (PCGS).
56 mm. 1291.7 grains. Edge mark indeterminate, apparently fraudulently removed by heavy edge filing on the edge (not the rim, as often seen at time of issue) at 6 o'clock. Mottled rose and peach, recovering from a significant cleaning. A rare type, associated through its reverse design with one of the rarest and most desirable of all Indian Peace medals. We sold a beautiful gem example of this variety as lot 2034 in our March 2024 sale; graded Specimen-65 by PCGS, it realized $2,640. An attractive example in somewhat lesser grade was included as lot 3 of the 2006 Ford XVI Indian Peace medal sale; it brought $632.50 at the time. Demand for this type is stout, but an original silver 18th century example requires a mortgage. This serves as a nice stand in.
From the Joe Foster Collection. Earlier from Presidential Coin & Antique Co., Inc.'s Auction 83, June 2013, lot 369.

Estimate: $1000
