Undated (ca. 1720?) Regiment de la Calotte Medal. Betts-Unlisted, Adams S-3. Bronze. MS-62 BN (PCGS).
592.6 grains. Plain edge. Long associated with John Law by numismatists, though generally agreed to not be of any real relevance to John Law at all. Medium ruddy brown with some good gloss and attractive surfaces. As early as 1907 Benjamin Betts listed this medal among the Law medals but, as Adams writes, was "quick to point out that it does not belong to the series." The depiction of the jester and a legend translating as "to laugh is to rule" is associated with the Calotte ethos of ridicule and farce. The reverse declares that "Momus (the god of nonsense) is our guide," according to Adams. It's nonsense that this is still included among the Law medals, but somehow it fits!
From the Joe Foster Collection. Earlier from Encheres Champagne Auction's sale of May 2017, lot 166.
