1690 Quebec Preserved Medal. Betts-71. Bronze. MS-64 BN (NGC).
41.0 mm. 524.6 grains. Plain edge. Beautiful chocolate brown with frosty luster on both sides. Aside from the spot beneath the letter CU in LUDOVICUS, this piece is essentially a Gem. The fields show strong cartwheel, a distinctive appearance for this type of medal; Mr. Foster called this a "plain edge / square edge, late strike original." We agree with his assessment, though the bronzing tone places this earlier than some of the more brassy-appearing examples around. Betts-71 is an elusive number; Ford had one, Adams had two. We appear not to have offered one since the 2006 Ford sale.
