1676 French Colony at Cayenne Retaken Medal. Betts-50. Bronze. MS-64 BN (PCGS).
41.4 mm. 485.2 grains. Plain edge. Rich chocolate brown with contrasting tones of tan and navy blue blended within and peeks of mint color around peripheral design elements. Glossy and lustrous with light field reflectivity. Handsome and sharply defined, a far finer example than usual. The planchet is well made, and only very trivial evidence of Paris Mint rim filing is visible atop the reverse. This reverse was called Reverse B in Ford, probably made after Reverse A began to suffer severe cracks. Among the plain edge originals like this one, struck before 1842, neither seems considerably rarer than the other.
From the Joe Foster Collection. Earlier ex Maison Florange, October 1965; John J. Ford, Jr.; our (Stack's) sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part XIII, January 2006, lot 723.
