Weight: 177 gms; diameter: 68mm. By JC Chaplain. Obverse: Portrait of Hermite facing right, CHARLES HERMITE DE L'ACADÉMIE DES SCIENCES around; Reverse: Palm frond on left, A CHARLES HERMITE MBRE DE L'INSTITUT PROFESSEUR D'ALGÈBRE SUPÉRIEURE A LA FACULTE DES SCIENCES SES ELEVES SES AMIRATEURS SES AMIS EN SOUVENIR DE SON 70EME ANNIVERSAIRE 24 DECEMBRE 1892 SOUSCRIPTION INTERNATIONALE right. Charles Hermite (1822-1901) was a French mathematician after whom many concepts and even a lunar crater are named. One of his students was mathematician Henri Poincaré, who's cousin Raymond became President of France, resulting in another Chaplain medal (pictured in this collection).
